A question I\u2019m very often asked by cat guardians is actually two questions in one: First, \u201cI\u2019m told that I should keep my cat indoors only, but at the same time, others say that it\u2019s cruel to confine them because it goes against their nature. So – can an indoor-only cat ever be truly happy?\u201d And naturally, the second part of the question is: \u201cIf so, then what can I do to help keep <\/span>my<\/span><\/i> indoor cat happy?”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To briefly address both ends of this question: First, yes, in a perfect world, cats would be able to explore both the indoor and outdoor components of what they naturally consider their territory. No matter how they\u2019ve evolved to be companions to us, \u201cThe Raw Cat,\u201d or the ancestor that lives inside them, is very much alive. The need to own and keep territory, and the need to hunt within that territory, are integral components to what I call \u201cCat Mojo,\u201d that natural spring of feline confidence and \u201chappiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n That said, we don\u2019t live in a perfect world. There are many things outdoors that threaten their survival – from cars and people who want to bring them harm, to injury and disease spread from fighting and defending turf, poison laid out for rodents, both land and air-based predators\u2026you get the idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n At the same time, another important factor is the fact that cats are one of nature\u2019s most evolved predators, who have had a negative impact on native bird and other wildlife populations – which has also resulted in anti-cat sentiment and legislation. So yes, it is for the greater good to keep our cats indoors.<\/span><\/p>\n Now to answer the second question (drumroll, please\u2026): You can absolutely, for sure, 110% keep your indoor cat happy! There\u2019s no need to worry about boredom or lack of stimulation, because just by making a few mindful changes you can provide a rich, fulfilling and, yes, <\/span>happy life<\/span><\/i> for your indoor family member.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Here\u2019s how:<\/span><\/p>\n A cat\u2019s relationship to their physical territory, as I said before, is crucial to their wellbeing. Cats are natural climbers and explorers, so designing your home with them in mind is one key to cat happiness! Vertical spaces like shelves, perches, and window seats allow your cat to oversee, traverse and own their territory. Don\u2019t forget to rotate toys to keep them interesting and to reduce the risk of boredom and destructive behaviors that could result.<\/span><\/p>\n Cats are truly creatures of habit who thrive on consistency – just like their humans!. Creating a series of important routines, stringing them together and repeating, gives your cat\u2019s life rhythm, which at the same time increases confidence and a sense of belonging while also reducing stress. A great place to start is by not leaving food out all of the time. Feed them meals at the same time each day, and then create play rituals around at least one of those meals. In a multi-cat household, this step alone will solidify a sense of belonging in a group.
