How to Keep Indoor Cats Happy: Essential Tips for Cat Guardians

A question I’m very often asked by cat guardians is actually two questions in one: First, “I’m told that I should keep my cat indoors only, but at the same time, others say that it’s cruel to confine them because it goes against their nature. So – can an indoor-only cat ever be truly happy?” And naturally, the second part of the question is: “If so, then what can I do to help keep my indoor cat happy?”

To briefly address both ends of this question: First, yes, in a perfect world, cats would be able to explore both the indoor and outdoor components of what they naturally consider their territory. No matter how they’ve evolved to be companions to us, “The Raw Cat,” or the ancestor that lives inside them, is very much alive. The need to own and keep territory, and the need to hunt within that territory, are integral components to what I call “Cat Mojo,” that natural spring of feline confidence and “happiness.”

That said, we don’t live in a perfect world. There are many things outdoors that threaten their survival – from cars and people who want to bring them harm, to injury and disease spread from fighting and defending turf, poison laid out for rodents, both land and air-based predators…you get the idea.

At the same time, another important factor is the fact that cats are one of nature’s most evolved predators, who have had a negative impact on native bird and other wildlife populations – which has also resulted in anti-cat sentiment and legislation. So yes, it is for the greater good to keep our cats indoors.

Now to answer the second question (drumroll, please…): You can absolutely, for sure, 110% keep your indoor cat happy! There’s no need to worry about boredom or lack of stimulation, because just by making a few mindful changes you can provide a rich, fulfilling and, yes, happy life for your indoor family member.

Here’s how:

1. Catification: Create a Cat-Centric Space

A cat’s relationship to their physical territory, as I said before, is crucial to their wellbeing. Cats are natural climbers and explorers, so designing your home with them in mind is one key to cat happiness! Vertical spaces like shelves, perches, and window seats allow your cat to oversee, traverse and own their territory. Speaking of ownership,  Scratching posts help to mark territory both visually and through scent, and cozy spots to decompress also speaks to the need of The Raw Cat. Remember, Catification doesn’t have to break the bank. You’d be surprised how far just a little investment of money and time will go towards a more invigorating and content life for your indoor cat.

2. Repeat After Me: I Will Play With My Cat!

Cats need to hunt, even if they have ample access to food at all times. It is hard-wired into their bodies and minds. That means that your indoor cat is depending on you to meet that need to “hunt, catch and kill” – and play is the way! Daily interactive play sessions with toys like wands or feathers mimic the hunt and keep them both mentally and physically engaged. The added bonus? While you are running around the house pretending to be a bird or a mouse, you are strengthening the bond between you and your cat while keeping them well-exercised and connected to their primal rituals.

3. Clicker and Harness Training

Clicker training is a great way to engage your cat’s mind and build a trusting relationship with you full of positive associations. Through positive reinforcement, you can teach your cat tricks like “sit” or “high five,” but as you help to develop skills, that same training technique can help reduce behaviors like scratching in inappropriate places or door-dashing, just to name a few. You can also use clicker training to help train your cat to use a harness and leash. It isn’t every cat’s cup of tea, but for those who really crave the outdoors, a harness offers a safe way to explore the neighborhood with you.

4. Puzzle Toys: Keep That Mind Sharp

Puzzle toys are an amazing addition to your daily routine with your cat. Why waste an opportunity for learning and focused play by just throwing some treats on the floor? Instead, opt for a choice that provides mental stimulation, slows down fast eaters, and helps to keep your cat engaged even when you’re not around. Don’t forget to rotate toys to keep them interesting and to reduce the risk of boredom and destructive behaviors that could result.

5. The 3 R’s: Routine, Ritual, and Rhythm

Cats are truly creatures of habit who thrive on consistency – just like their humans!. Creating a series of important routines, stringing them together and repeating, gives your cat’s life rhythm, which at the same time increases confidence and a sense of belonging while also reducing stress. A great place to start is by not leaving food out all of the time. Feed them meals at the same time each day, and then create play rituals around at least one of those meals. In a multi-cat household, this step alone will solidify a sense of belonging in a group. That said, it doesn’t matter if you have one cat or a whole clowder of cats – The 3 R’s will create a deep sense of security, which is key to a happy cat.

6. Spay and Neuter

Spaying and neutering isn’t just about controlling the population (which makes for a whole world of happier cats and humans!); it also reduces stress-related behaviors like aggression, chronic escaping and marking. Beyond just the behavioral benefits, spaying or neutering your cat is also a relatively simple step that has been shown to contribute to a longer, healthier life for your cat.

7. Quality Time: The Best Investment

Last but certainly not least, the greatest gift you can give your cat is your time. One of the false stereotypes about cats is that they are fiercely independent to the point where they are aloof, and they really don’t care if you interact with them or not. Not true! Whether it’s playing, petting, or just sitting with them and talking to them, cats are no different than any of us – loving connection and the unbreakable bond of family is what keeps your cat fulfilled on every level. Make it a point to spend quality time together every day – you’ll both be happier for it, and that’s a guarantee.
